Leeds United defender Kyle Bartley has told BBC Radio Leeds that Newcastle United star Dwight Gayle is a top striker.

Bartley made the comment following the Magpies’ 2-0 victory over Leeds United away from home at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

Gayle scored twice for Rafael Benitez’s side, first in the 23rd minute and then on 54 minutes.

The striker has scored 13 goals and created 14 chances in 13 Championship appearances for Newcastle so far this season.

Bartley, who joined Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Swansea City in the summer transfer window, has praised the 26-year-old former Peterborough United striker.

“He is just clinical,” the 25-year-old centre-back told BBC Radio Leeds. “He is a natural goalscorer, and he is in the right spot at the right time. If you are going to be at the top, it’s imperative you have a top striker.”

Gayle joined Championship club Newcastle from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.

According to Sky Sports, the Magpies had to pay Palace a transfer fee of £10 million in order to secure the services of the 26-year-old striker.

Newcastle are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 40 points from 17 matches.

The Magpies are five points clear of second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion and are firm favourites to win the league title this season.
