Celtic have signed midfielder Kundai Benyu from Ipswich Town.

Celtic new boy Kundai Benyu has told the Daily Mail that he was watching the Bhoys in action against Aberdeen when he was told about the club’s interest in signing him.

The Bhoys had already landed winger Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen before landing their second signing of the summer by sealing a move for Ipswich Town midfielder Benyu.

Benyu, 19, had come up through the ranks with Ipswich, but he chose to leave the club this summer after failing to agree terms on a new contract at Portman Road.

The midfielder impressed on loan with non-league Aldershot Town last season, notching five goals and three assists before signing for Celtic after his Ipswich deal came to an end.

Celtic, who have had to pay compensation to land Benyu, will now be hoping to nurture and develop the teenager over the coming years, just as they have with the likes of Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele.

With the likes of Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton and Eboue Kouassi all vying for playing time, we may not see Benyu play a major role next season, but he could be a star of the future for the Bhoys.

Now, Benyu has spoken to the Daily Mail about how his move came about, and claims that he was first told of Celtic’s interest as he was – ironically – watching the Bhoys win the Scottish Cup final with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

Benyu admitted that he couldn’t believe Celtic were keen, but he spent the game supporting Brendan Rodgers’ men, and was ‘buzzing’ when Rogic won the game with a late goal.

“I was in my friend’s house in London watching the Scottish Cup final when my agent called me and told me Celtic were interested,” said Benyu. “I couldn’t believe it. From then on, it all went pretty quickly. After that I was more or less supporting Celtic — and I was buzzing when they scored that late (winning) goal,” he added.
