Kristoffer Ajer has struggled for game-time since joining Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in 2016.

Kristoffer Ajer has suggested, in comments reported by the Evening Times, that it seems crazy to him that he has already played seven games for Celtic since arriving at Parkhead in 2016.

Ajer has been a peripheral figure since moving to the Scottish Premiership side, making just five first-team appearances and playing a further two games for their under-20 side in last season’s Challenge Cup.

But while some may have been disappointed with the limited amount of game-time, the 19-year-old appeared very philosophical about his situation, insisting that he is happy with the progress that he has made.

“It is a situation where it is the Champions League team and I am 19 years old,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“I’ve played seven games already for Celtic, which has been crazy for me, and I know I’m taking steps every single day.

“I know that I’m taking steps with the support of those I’m training with, and with (coach) Kolo Touré, as I work out everyday after training. I’m in a very good place.”

It is probably little surprise that the teenager has not been a regular member of the squad, as while he arrived during the same summer as Brendan Rodgers, the deal to sign him was done when Ronny Deila was in charge.

And the fact that Deila was bound to have a much better understanding of the Norwegian game than the Hoops hierarchy hints that he would have been instrumental in initially scouting Ajer, and would have been the one who felt particularly confident about his potential.

But with Celtic struggling for centre-back options and with the Bhoys keeping clean sheets in three of his four appearances this term, it may not be too long before Ajer is given the chance to add to his appearance tally and prove how far he has actually come since arriving.
