Kristoffer Ajer has confirmed to The Daily Record that he will return to Celtic this summer and fight for his place in Brendan Rodgers’s side next season.

The 19-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Kilmarnock and impressed in an unfamiliar centre-back role.

The Record reported that Kilmarnock boss Lee McCulloch is keen to re-sign him for next season, but the big Norwegian – who was signed by former Celtic boss Ronny Deila – says he cannot wait to test himself in this Hoops side next term.

Rodgers’s troops beat Aberdeen 2-1 last weekend to win the Scottish Cup and clinch a domestic treble without losing a match in any of the three competitions – a remarkable achievement which Ajer believes will make it all the more difficult to get a look-in.

But the teenager says that he is determined to make it at Parkhead after watching from afar and seeing the Hoops’ “crazy season” last time around.

“Next season will be interesting for me. The plan is to return to Celtic this summer,” he told The Record.

“I’ll do everything I can to make it at Celtic. Ideally, I want to be in the team, so we will see how it goes.

“They had a crazy season without a single loss so it won’t be easy. But they are a massive club who I want to get back to. Celtic have been closely following me and it shows they have faith in me.

“It was very important to me I was able to get out and play at another club in a new position for me. It was a very successful loan at Kilmarnock. I played every minute and did very well. It has been a wonderful year.

“I joined a very ambitious club in Kilmarnock and it was great to be there.”
