The young midfielder impressed at centre-back in the win over Wolfsburg on Saturday.
Celtic youngster Kristoffer Ajer has told the club’s official website that Brendan Rodgers wants him to develop as a centre-back at the club.
Ajer is a new signing at the Scottish champions this summer having been brought in by former manager Ronny Deila.
He made a surprise home debut on Saturday afternoon as he was brought on as an early substitute for Erik Sviatchenko in the 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.
It proved to be an excellent performance from him too when he settled into the game, going on to be named Man of the Match in the victory.
Playing in defence is something of a new experience to him given he is principally a midfielder, but Ajer says his new manager has plans to develop him as a centre-back moving forward.
“I came to Celtic to play and if he (the manager) gives me the opportunity, I’m ready,” he told celticfc.net.
“He has a lot of midfielders so he knows I can play there but he also wants me to develop as a centre-half which I think is good to be able to play more positions.”
It would not be surprising to see Ajer feature more regularly as a centre back in future given the issues Celtic have in the position.
They are short of quality at centre-back at present, with Efe Ambrose in particular coming in for criticism for his performances.
Rodgers has a track record of using midfielders in defence, too, having done just that with Emre Can at Liverpool, and it appears that Ajer will be following that path.
