Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer is backed by Brendan Rodgers to learn from the mistake which soured his performance at Accies.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has defended the “absolutely fantastic” Kristoffer Ajer following his error on Sunday.
Celtic moved to the brink of a seventh successive Premiership title by winning 2-1 away to Hamilton Academical.
Callum McGregor fired the Hoops ahead early on, only for Rakish Bingham to cancel it out by running on to an over-the-top ball and finishing well past Scott Bain on 18 minutes.
Bingham caught Ajer flat-footed and the 19-year-old centre-back was partially blamed by BT Sports’ Chris Sutton during his commentary of the match.
It was a rare lapse in concentration from a player who has been a revelation for Celtic since the turn of the year, earning a senior debut for Norway during the international break.
And Rodgers is certain that Ajer – an £800,000 signing under Ronny Deila’s reign in 2016 – will learn from the mishap.
“We have so many young players that are learning the game and Kris has been absolutely fantastic,” he told BBC Sport.
“He just switched off for that moment, squared himself up and a quick player will get in behind you. He’ll learn from that.”
Leigh Griffiths went on to rescue Celtic with a second-half winner which ensures that Premiership success is all but guaranteed, but Rodgers’s side need to beat Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday to keep alive the dream of a historic double treble.
