Glasgow Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack was sent off during the Ibrox side’s Scottish Premiership win on Sunday.
Kris Commons has told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership clash with Aberdeen (broadcast on 3rd December 2017 from 12:00 pm) that he has no sympathy for Ryan Jack after he was dismissed in the fixture, insisting that his challenge on Stevie May was disgusting.
The Gers were 1-0 up 10 minutes into the second-half at Pittodrie when Jack left the referee with a decision to make after a challenge saw him play the ball but then follow through and catch Dons forward May with his studs around his shin.
The official proceeded to dismiss the former Aberdeen man – who has seen red four times in his Gers career already, though not all of them have subsequently stood – and Commons clearly felt that it was the right decision to send the midfielder off.
“It’s a disgusting challenge,” he told Sky Sports.
“I’ll tell you what, Stevie May’s lucky he’s not going off on a stretcher. It could’ve wrecked his whole career, could’ve snapped his leg in two, it was a disgusting challenge.”
It would certainly be no surprise if Jack’s dismissal divides those who saw it. The contact with May is incredibly nasty, and there may be those who, like Commons, believe that Jack was able to prevent himself flying in further once the ball was won.
However, there may be those who feel that the summer signing could have done little to avoid the contact with the leg not changing its path after it had won the ball and with May running towards him.
Of course, the potential suspension is certainly not ideal for Rangers, but Graeme Murty will be glad that the decision did not cost them as they scored their second goal just seven minutes after the red card, and saw the contest out after Aberdeen had got a goal back.
