Rangers defender Lee Wallace looks set to leave Ibrox.

Pundit Kris Commons has told the Daily Mail (The Verdict, p16, 29/04) that he thinks Rangers are ‘cutting off their nose to spite their face’ with Lee Wallace.

The Gers coasted home to a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon, with two James Tavernier penalties sealing the win from two fouls on Nikola Katic.

Rangers managed to sew up second place with that win, and fans were able to seemingly give defender Wallace a fine send off late in the game.

Steven Gerrard introduced left back Wallace as a late substitute, with the Ibrox faithful given a chance to essentially say goodbye to the 31-year-old.

Wallace’s contract expires this summer, and with seemingly no plans to extend the deal, Rangers are set to let the Scot leave on a free transfer after eight years at Ibrox.

With Borna Barisic seemingly done at Ibrox already, Wallace’s place on the bench was merited according to Gerrard, but it still looks like Wallace will leave.

Now, pundit Commons has blasted the decision, suggesting that Rangers are letting politics take over their decision on Wallace after he was embroiled in a bust-up after Rangers lost 4-0 to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-finals last season.

Commons is adamant that Wallace is still the best left back at Rangers on his day, and yet they’re so willing to let him go for absolutely nothing, which doesn’t make sense to the ex-Celtic playmaker.

“On what could be his final appearance at Ibrox, it was the very least he deserves,” said Commons. “A fitting send-off ahead of his contract expiring this summer. But it does beg the question: Why on earth have Rangers allowed him to become the forgotten man?”

“There are politics involved here and it all harks back to the 4-0 thrashing against Celtic in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup last season. It has been a bizarre affair, and I can’t help but think Rangers are cutting their nose off to spite their face. On his day, Wallace is still the best left back in the building – and they’re about to let him walk out the door. Wallace is effectively fourth-choice when, in reality, he’s Rangers’ best player in that position.” he added.
