Kris Commons says Virgil van Dijk class above Victor Wanyama

Kris Commons played with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk and Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama at Celtic Park outfit Celtic.

Former Celtic star Kris Commons has been quoted as saying by The Scottish Sun that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is a class above Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Commons played with 26-year-old Netherlands international centre-back Van Dijk and 26-year-old Kenya international Wanyama at Celtic.

Van Dijk joined Celtic from Dutch club Groningen in the summer of 2013 and played for the Glasgow giants for two seasons.

Southampton paid the Bhoys a transfer fee of £13m, as reported by BBC Sport, in the summer of 2015 in order to secure the services of the 26-year-old Dutch centre-back.

Wanyama was on the books of Celtic from 2011 until 2013 when he joined Southampton for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12.5 million.

After three impressive seasons at the Saints, the former Beerschot midfielder moved to Tottenham in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £11m.

Commons, who was on the books of Celtic from 2011 until the end of the 2016-17 season, has suggested that Van Dijk is a better footballer than Wanyama.

“Victor’s not technically great – he’s a warrior,” The Scottish Sun quotes Commons as saying. “Victor’s one that will take the ball off you willy-nilly. He’ll get the ball, keep it simple, and be a driving force and an aerial threat from set pieces.

“Ask Victor to strike a ball, he doesn’t look naturally technical. Whereas Virgil van Dijk – ball at his feet, free-kicks, kicking balls…Virgil was a class above.”
