Kris Commons prefers Allan McGregor of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers over Celtic’s Craig Gordon.
Kris Commons has told BBC Sportsound that only Rangers star Allan McGregor would get into Celtic’s best XI.
McGregor has been a revelation since returning to Rangers during the summer and has arguably been Steven Gerrard’s best player this season.
The 36-year-old has also ousted Celtic number one Craig Gordon at international level, and his performance in Scotland’s 3-2 win over Israel last week illustrated why he is ahead of the Hoops keeper.
Gerrard has plenty of talented players at Ibrox, but former Celtic star Commons reckons only McGregor would get into Brendan Rodger’s first XI at Parkhead.
“Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon have been Scotland rivals for that number one jersey for many years. They’ve gone through spells of playing excellent football and some real tough injuries,” Commons told BBC Sportsound.
“But at this minute in time, Allan McGregor is playing at a real, real top level. I think he’s massive for Rangers. He’s huge for the country as well. The save that he pulled off against Israel showed you his qualities.
“I would say that only possibly one, just because of how well Allan’s playing at this minute that he would get in the Celtic team.”
Being honest, Commons is probably right. As good as Gordon has been this season, he is prone to the occasional error and McGregor is simply that bit more reliable than his Bhoys counterpart.
Long-term, though, Rangers need somebody else.
The Scottish veteran turns 37 in January and, with Wes Foderingham linked with a move away, Gerrard should look at bringing in a new keeper to provide better competition for McGregor than his English team-mate is managing to at the moment.
