Confidence has been sapped at Rangers after their 4-0 loss to Celtic and manager Graeme Murty is under pressure.
Rangers tried to hire Derek McInnes before settling on promoting Murty from his role as under-20 coach.
Former Celtic attacker Kris Commons says that Rangers atrocious result at the weekend shows how far behind they are, and made McInnes right for turning them down.
He said this is because Murty was not given backing in the transfer market, and this put McInnes off taking the role.
Commons told The Mail: “Would the scale of the investment required put off some prospective managers? One hundred per cent. It put Derek McInnes off.
“I’m just not sure they have enough money to invest in a top manager to compete with Brendan Rodgers and invest in the squad.”
Rangers did bring players in during January but they were signed on loan deals, with minimal investment.
Perhaps this result against Celtic will underline how far they are behind, and convince the Rangers board to either invest the money or if they do not have it, attract an investor who can.
It may be that only when they do, they will be able to attract a top quality manager, one with a better record than the man who turned them down.
