Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers botched their attempt to hire Derek McInnes last week.
Writing in The Daily Mail, Kris Commons has slammed Rangers over that statement regarding Derek McInnes.
Rangers tried and failed to appoint McInnes as their new manager last week but the Aberdeen boss opted to remain at Pittodrie for the time being.
The Gers had been expected to wrap up a deal for the 46-year-old and the fact that they failed, six weeks after sacking Pedro Caixinha, has given rise to suggestions that the club’s hierarchy were not properly organised in the way in which they went about the replacement process.
After McInnes snubbed them, the Ibrox side released a statement and suggested that the former Scottish midfielder – who played for the club – was not up to the challenge of “managing a massive club like Rangers.”
Several high-profile pundits and past players have absolutely slammed the club’s statement and Commons has followed suit by revealing that even Rangers fans found it “pathetic”.
“It’s an embarrassing reaction which tried to undermine everything Derek McInnes has achieved,” he wrote in The Daily Mail.
“Primarily, it questioned if he’d the guts to come in and take the club forward. It took a pop at his ambition and drive. I thought it was very unprofessional and lacked class.
“And I don’t think that’s just coming from myself or any Celtic fans. I saw a lot of Rangers fans on social media saying they thought it was pathetic. For Rangers to come out and criticise him to for turning them down was extraordinary.”
Graeme Murty will continue as the Gers’ manager until the end of the season.
