The Celtic hitman hasn’t played since December due to personal issues.
Kris Commons has written in his column for the print edition of The Scottish Daily Mail [04/03/2019] that Leigh Griffiths isn’t far away from making his long-awaited return for Celtic.
The 28-year-old striker hasn’t kicked a ball for Celtic since December, when he was ruled out for the coming months with personal issues.
There had been no updates on the Scot’s status since January and Brendan Rodgers’s shock departure from Parkhead last week took centre stage.
Rodgers has been replaced by Neil Lennon on an interim basis, and former Celtic star says that Lennon, who brought Griffiths to Parkhead in 2014, has spoken to his old player more in a week than the new Leicester City boss had done in months.
“It’s my understanding that Griffiths is close to making his return following some off-field personal difficulties,” he wrote in his Scottish Daily Mail column.
“He [Lennon] will put an arm round him and give him all the time he needs.
“From what I’m hearing, Lennon has spoken more to Griffiths over the past week than Brendan Rodgers did during the past two months.”
Having Griffiths back would be a huge boost for Celtic. It’s easy to forget, but he might be their best goalscorer and scoring 40 times during the 2015-16 season proves as much.
Lennon’s side are eight points clear in the Scottish Premiership title race, but if they can get the former Hibernian striker back to aid their Scottish Cup bid then that would be ideal for the Bhoys.
