Rangers made an exciting announcement today in the form of Ross Wilson’s arrival.
The 36-year-old has been named as Mark Allen’s replacement in a Director of Football role at Ibrox.
The position was vacated by Allen in sudden circumstances last month, but Rangers have moved quick to sign the former Southampton transfer guru.
On the South Coast, Wilson was responsible for the recruitment of former Celtic star Virgil van Dijk, with BBC pundit Tam McManus writing on Twitter last week that he could be the Gers’ best-ever signing due to his nous.
But former Hoops star Kris Commons isn’t so sure.
Commons, writing in The Scottish Daily Mail, believes that Wilson has a lot to prove, suggesting that for every Van Dijk there’s another addition that didn’t quite work out.
He wrote: “His one big claim to fame is that he signed Virgil van Dijk in the summer of 2015 and made a huge profit in selling him to Liverpool. But, overall, his record is actually quite ropey.
“Big-money acquisitions like Guido Carrillo, Mario Lemina, Sofiane Boufal and Mohamed Elyounoussi, now on loan at Celtic, are the names that will haunt Saints fans.

“Listen, if Wilson takes the director of football role at Rangers and signs another Van Dijk, fair play to him. But the jury is still out. He still has a lot to prove as and when he takes the gig at Ibrox.”
Nevertheless, getting Wilson in now was key. Allen had to be replaced swiftly and now Wilson and manager Steven Gerrard can work on January targets.
Rangers, who sit two points ahead of Celtic, have a chance of doing something special this season, and a solid winter transfer window would reiterate their ambition.
