Kris Commons has claimed in his Daily Mail column that Rangers are lacking the kind of away form required to be serious title contenders, and reckons James Tavernier is the club’s most attacking threat.

Rangers were far from their best on Sunday afternoon as the Gers earned a 4-1 win over Hamilton, a match that could have easily gone either way. Ryan Kent opened the scoring, only for Hamilton to equalise in the 80th minute.

Two penalties from Tavernier and a late strike from Alfredo Morelos earned Rangers all three points over Martin Canning’s side, but they will need to be in much better shape this week against Spartak Moscow.

Commons reckons the Gers need to be much better away from home, despite the win against Hamilton – which was their first league win away from Ibrox since February 2018. Commons also criticised the Gers’ attack.

“The main attacking threat for Rangers just now is often James Tavernier. You can’t rely on your right back to make things happen. They’re missing a player with that real X Factor,” Commons said.

“Yeah, okay, the plastic pitch wasn’t great. There’s only three stands, one of which is a gazebo. But you can’t be using that as an excuse.

“If Rangers sort their away form out, they could be real title contenders. But we just don’t know for sure at the moment. They’re so inconsistent.”

Kris Commons lifts the League and League cup for Celtic after the Scottish Premiership Match between Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle at Celtic Park on May 24, 2015 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Morelos has been in top form for Rangers this season, notching his 12th of the season already and although Tavernier has scored eight goals himself, seven of those have been from the penalty spot.

The Gers sit in fifth place after their win over Hamilton, with Gerrard suffering only two defeats in 21 league and cup encounters since joining the club, after a stint at Liverpool as Under-18’s manager.

Gerrard will focus on preparing his side for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Spartak Moscow, before facing Aberdeen on the weekend in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.
