Kris Commons claims Rangers may take one step forward, two steps back

Rangers have been in fine form under Graeme Murty this year.

Pundit Kris Commons has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Rangers could take one step forward and two steps back over their loan signings.

The Gers picked up another convincing victory on Sunday afternoon, beating Falkirk 4-1 in the Scottish Cup to advance into the semi-finals of the competition, teeing up a clash with Old Firm rivals Celtic.

That’s now nine wins in ten games in all competitions in 2018, enjoying a blistering run of form under manager Graeme Murty since the turn of the year.

Rangers have now put pressure on Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, sitting just six points behind the Bhoys ahead of the upcoming Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Part of the reason for Rangers’ upturn in form is their impressive work in January transfer window, as Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings all arrived on loan, with Greg Docherty signing permanently from Hamilton Academical.

Rangers’ new signings have made a huge impact, and will hope to do so against Celtic too, but pundit Kris Commons has concerns about the Gers moving forward.

Commons has told the Daily Mail that he isn’t sure whether Murty should land the job permanently as whilst Martin, Goss and Murphy could help him challenge Celtic right now, they may not be there next season.

Commons thinks that Rangers may subsequently take one step forward and two steps back if they all leave this summer, adding that it will take ‘huge investment’ for Rangers to get close to Celtic.

“Should Graeme Murty get the Rangers job if they win next weekend? That depends,” said Commons. “Three of his key players, Russell Martin, Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy – who remains likely to start ahead of hat-trick hero Jason Cummings next weekend – are all on loan and may not be there next season. So it’s a difficult one. It could be one step forward and two back for the Ibrox side. I still think it will take a huge investment in the Rangers squad to get them close to Celtic,” he added.
