Glasgow Rangers were linked with potentially trying to bring Steven Naismith back to Ibrox during this window.

Steven Naismith of Rangers celebrates at the end of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on September 18, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In comments by BBC Sport, Kris Commons has admitted his surprise that Rangers did not manage to bring Steven Naismith back to Ibrox this month, and suggested that it could have been the ideal partnership had he returned.

BBC Sport reports that the 31-year-old is closing in on a return to the Scottish Premiership, but with Hearts set to sign him from Norwich City on loan for the rest of the season.

BBC Sport adds that Rangers – for whom, Naismith played for five years – were linked with trying to bring the forward back. And Commons has expressed his shock that the Gers did not do more to bring the former Everton man in this month.

“I thought it was an ideal partnership if he could have got to Rangers,” he said, as reported by BBC Sport.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I am very surprised that Rangers didn’t go for him,” he went on to add. “At the moment, Kenny Miller’s not fit, Alfredo Morelos – I’ve seen him play very hot and cold.

“Cummings coming into the squad, he scores the kind of goals Morelos doesn’t, but Naismith is not just a scorer of goals but a creator of them and is a figure who other players will look up to.”

In fairness to Rangers, they have certainly had little problem strengthening their attacking options during this window, with Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings both arriving on loan until the end of the season.

And with the likes of Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos shining at stages throughout the season, Graeme Murty may have perhaps felt that he would not have been able to offer Naismith the amount of game-time that he would have been looking for – if it was the case that Rangers did not follow up on the links and make a move.
