Celtic player Kris Commons has been speaking to the Scottish Sun about his frustrating final year at the club, admitting that he was unable to make any impact due to ongoing fitness problems.

Commons has racked up 227 appearances for the Bhoys, scoring 89 goals and providing 72 assists in the process. However he has not been seen in the first-team set-up since Brendan Rodgers took charge, his only competitive action coming during a brief loan spell with Hibernian.

“It’s been frustrating not to play but the truth is I have had four back injections and that’s been a sticking point,” he told the Scottish Sun. “I’ve not been fit enough to play.”

Commons has had to watch as Celtic overcame every opponent in their way to finish the Scottish Premiership season undefeated, lifting the title in the process, securing the Scottish League Cup and reaching the final of the Scottish Cup.

With just one game left this season Commons will know he has almost certainly made his last appearance for a team he has served admirably. And he will clearly miss Celtic when he moves on permanently this summer.

His short spell at Hibernian proved he can still score and create on a regular basis and it will be interesting to see where he goes, with plenty of sides likely to be keen on the 33-year-old free agent.

It is testament to the strength in depth at Celtic right now that Rodgers could overlook a player of his experience time and again, even when you factor in his injury problems.
