Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers are not fans of plastic pitches.

Kris Boyd has suggested in The Scottish Sun that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers should accept that plastic pitches are here to stay.

There have been concerns about plastic pitches in Scotland from Rangers boss Gerrard and Celtic manager Rodgers, as quoted in The Daily Record and The Daily Mail.

Kilmarnock themselves play on a plastic pitch at Rugby Park, and their strike Boyd – who had two separate spells at Rangers – has suggested that Gerrard and Rodgers should accept that such pitches are here to stay.

Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Whether Steven Gerrard or Brendan Rodgers like it or not — and I do understand their concerns — the surfaces are here to stay.

“In Scotland, 15 of our 42 professional teams have artificial surfaces and that number is only going to rise.

“In terms of financial sustainability, it is a necessity for certain clubs to get rid of their grass. And to make grass pitches a prerequisite of playing in the top flight just doesn’t work.”

Accepting the reality

There is no rule against having plastic pitches, and it would be better for Rodgers and Gerrard to accept that they have to deal with it.

After all, Kilmarnock, Livingston and Hamilton Academical play on plastic pitches, and their players have got used to it and do not complain about playing on them.

Title race

Meanwhile, Celtic have gone eight points clear of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

There are still enough games for the Gers to catch up with the Hoops, but until and unless Rodgers’s team suffer a collapse, it is hard to see Rangers close the gap.
