Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, seven points back of Celtic.
Kris Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that he is not buying the idea that Celtic are untouchable in the Scottish Premiership, and suggested that it may take as few as five signings for Rangers to close the gap to their bitter rivals.
Rangers seem to finally be on the verge of establishing themselves as the Hoops’ nearest challengers in the top flight, with back to back victories over Aberdeen seeing the Gers move ahead of the Dons and into second in the table.
It appears unlikely however, that they will be able to catch Brendan Rodgers’ men, with the Bhoys still unbeaten in domestic competition since he arrived and seven points clear of their Old Firm foes with a game in hand.
But Boyd is optimistic for his old side that talk of 10 titles in a row for Celtic is not a formality – suggesting how many signings Rangers may need to start putting pressure on the league leaders.
“It doesn’t need to be a complete overhaul at Ibrox.
“They don’t need to sign a dozen new players to close the gap — five or six could be enough.
“It will still take a bit of time and there has to be realistic targets.”
Unfortunately for Rangers fans, the challenge for them will be making sure that the five or six signings they need to make in Boyd’s eyes are good enough to make an impact and help close the gap.
The Gers’ transfer record since they returned to the top flight is arguably sketchy, and every window that passes where they do not get it right arguably leaves the door open for Celtic to extend their advantage as they have trophies and European football to offer potential targets.
