Kris Boyd has confidently claimed that Rangers defender James Tavernier would be a bigger loss to the club than Alfredo Morelos if both of them were to leave.
A big summer awaits Steven Gerrard’s side as they aim to close the gap on their Old Firm rivals, with Boyd previously stating that he would sell Morelos this summer [Sky Sports].
Striker Morelos, who joined the club from Helsinki for £1 million in 2017 [Daily Record], has had an outstanding season in terms of goals scored, yet problematic when it comes to his behaviour.
Boyd was asked the question about who would be a bigger loss, Morelos or Tavernier, as he explained why the latter is so important to Gerrard.
On who will be a bigger loss: “Tavernier,” Boyd told Sky Sports. “I think the way he plays. We are all caught up in this modern day fullback. You see the stats from last season in terms of goals and opportunities taken. I know a lot of them came from the penalty spot, but you still need somebody to stand up there and take them.
“He brings so much more to the Rangers team going forward. He’s an outlet and he can create so many opportunities.”
Right-back Tavernier was a regular for the club during the recently concluded campaign and will be even more important next term as they push for the Scottish Premiership title.
Last term, the Bradford-born player played 57 games for the club, scoring 17 goals and supplying his teammates with 20 assists [transfermarkt].
