Kris Boyd has criticised Newcastle defender Grant Hanley ahead of Scotland’s game with England.

Former Scotland and Rangers striker Kris Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that he’s sick of seeing Newcastle defender Grant Hanley make the same mistakes for his country.

Scotland make the short trip south to take on England this evening, with Gordon Strachan’s made desperate for a win in a difficult game for the Tartan Army.

Strachan is under pressure after a home draw with Lithuania and away defeat at Slovakia during the last international break, and some believe that a defeat against England could lead to Strachan’s departure.

The former Celtic boss has plenty to consider ahead of the game in terms of team selection, and Kris Boyd – who worked with Strachan at Middlesbrough – has had his say on the team.

Boyd, 33, earned 18 caps for Scotland and is currently playing for Kilmarnock, and has told The Scottish Sun that he is worried about Scotland’s defence ahead of the England clash.

Boyd drew particular attention to the performances of centre back Grant Hanley, who was heavily criticised during the last international break after poor displays against Lithuania and Slovakia.

The Newcastle summer signing, 24, has made just five Championship appearances for the Magpies since joining from Blackburn Rovers over the summer, and he’s been accused of being rusty when he plays for Scotland.

Boyd suggested that he’s ‘fed up’ of seeing Hanley making the same mistakes time and time again for Scotland, and in his preferred team for the game, he chose Ipswich Town’s Christophe Berra to play alongside Russell Martin at centre back ahead of Hanley.

“Good luck to Gordon Strachan at Wembley,” said Boyd. “I can’t help but think he’s going to need it. I don’t know about my old Middlesbrough boss, but one look at the defenders in his squad has me coming out in a cold sweat.”

“I hate to say it because I always like to think of the positives ahead of any big game, but I really am worried about this one. No harm to Grant Hanley but I’m fed up seeing him make the same mistakes in a Scotland top. Chances are it will be Hanley who Gordon picks to play alongside Martin, but for me that would be a big mistake.” he added.
