The veteran striker has insisted that people need to “get real” over the young star.

Celtic's Moussa Dembele

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has written in the Scottish Sun that suggestions that Celtic star Moussa Dembele is worth upwards of £30 million are “utterly ridiculous”.

Dembele has been lethal for the Hoops since joining the club from Fulham in the summer, scoring 16 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

That tally has included an historic hat-trick against Rangers in the Old Firm derby, as well as a brace against Manchester City in the Champions League.

His remarkable form has led to reports, such as this one from the Daily Express, suggesting that he could be worth somewhere in the region of up to £40 million when he is to move on from the Scottish champions.

However, former Rangers hero Boyd is clearly having none of that talk, and urged people to “get real” over the talent and valuation of the 20-year-old, whom, he pointed out, was ignored by big English clubs in the transfer window.

Boyd wrote for the Scottish Sun: “I have two words for Brendan Rodgers or anyone else for that matter who thinks Moussa Dembele will be sold for upwards of £20million. Get real.

“Don’t get me wrong, the Celtic striker has been sensational this season. There’s no doubt he’s a player. But this idea he’s going to leave for £30m or even £40m is utterly ridiculous.Celtic's Moussa Dembele celebrates scoring a goal

“Why is Dembele in Scotland? If any English club seriously wanted him they would have got him. Instead, they let Celtic have him. Why?”

Dembele is undoubtedly a huge talent and a potential top-class star of European football in the future, but Boyd has a point.

One swallow does not make a summer, and though Dembele had a decent scoring record in his last season at Fulham, to place such a high valuation on a player who is yet to reach half a season in Scottish football is eyebrow-raising, to say the least.
