Boyd, who had two separate spells at Rangers and is now at Kilmarnock, believes that McGregor has been one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership this season.
Davis played for Rangers from 2008 until 2012 and is now on the books of Southampton in the Premier League.
According to BBC Sport, Rangers are on the verge of signing the 34-year-old Northern Ireland international midfielder in the January transfer window.
Boyd wrote about McGregor in The Scottish Sun: “He controls the games by knowing everything that’s going on around him.
“He reminds me of Steven Davis who was one step ahead of the play when I was with him at Rangers.
“I could make my run before he had the ball because I knew Davo would spot my movement. McGregor is the same, always looking to play the ball forward.”
