Rangers are reportedly closing in on bringing Jake Hastie to Ibrox.

Rangers have now gone four games without a win, and rather than boss Steven Gerrard receive criticism, it’s Mark Allen being slated by many.

The Rangers director of football has overseen transfers under Gerrard’s reign, but it’s fair to say there have been a host of flops.

Eros Grezda and Borna Barisic haven’t lived up to expectations, whilst Lassana Coulibaly, Kyle Lafferty, Umar Sadiq and Ovie Ejaria have been other disappointing additions.

Allen must improve his success record in the transfer market this summer, but he’s received huge criticism from former Rangers hero Kris Boyd.

Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that Allen ‘doesn’t fool’ him, and slated the idea to have so many wingers at the club, with The Scottish Sun noting that a pre-contract deal for Motherwell winger Jake Hastie is imminent.

“Mark Allen is quick enough to jump around changing rooms when the team wins, but what has he actually contributed?” said Boyd. “He paints himself as the mastermind in everything that’s good when Rangers are winning, but he doesn’t fool me.”

“For a start, why are there four left-wingers at the club in Glenn Middleton, Ryan Kent, Jamie Murphy and Eros Grezda? Jordan Jones is another one on the way with Jake Hastie expected to follow. That just doesn’t make any sense to me,” he added.

Kent is only on loan, but Boyd does make a good point. Rangers already have a host of wingers of a similar quality, yet now look to be bringing in another wide man in Hastie, if the deal goes through.

Hastie is another young Scottish winger, much like Middleton. Incoming Jones is a right-footed left winger, just like Murphy and Kent. This seems like stockpiling in a bizarre way, acquiring similar players in the same areas of the pitch.

Allen may well have a plan in mind; Middleton out on loan or Kent simply not being pursued permanently. Yet as things stand, Boyd’s stance – as honest as it may be – looks to be reasonable, with Rangers fans surely concerned at so many similar wingers coming in.
