Kris Boyd has told Sky Sports’ coverage of Rangers winning on Tuesday night that Alfredo Morelos needs to do more up top – and suggests Scott Arfield or Fashion Sakala could replace the Ibrox striker ahead of Friday’s outing.

Morelos, 26, has started both games for Michael Beale since the new manager arrived at Rangers. He got the winner against Hibernian last Thursday – and lasted 90 minutes on Tuesday night. Antonio Colak is still missing through injury.

While Morelos was good against Hibernian, he struggled to get the better of the Aberdeen defence at Pittodrie. WhoScored report he touched the ball just 32 times, less than half Ryan Kent’s touches. He struggled to get involved.

Boyd was critical of Morelos, urging the Colombia international to do more if he is to lead the line for Rangers. He also suggests two replacements – if Colak is out. Arfield as a false nine, or Sakala to come in to the middle after two in two.

“He needs to do more, there’s no doubt about it. I’m looking at Friday night, could Scott Arfield fill that role as a false nine? Could Sakala come off the wing? It’s got to be a lot better at the top end of the pitch for Rangers,” Boyd said.

Boyd: Rangers striker Morelos needs to do more up top

What a game. Aberdeen were good value for at least a point, but Rangers showed mentality and character. Perhaps, it is a change in times – under Gio van Bronckhorst earlier this seasons, the Gers would have admitted defeat and lost.

But the belief is back under Beale. That fight, that willingness to change the outcome. Arfield was excellent. But even late on, James Tavernier, Malik Tillman, Ryan Kent – they were all trying to make thing happen for Rangers.

For Morelos, he just needs games and to be told he is the main man. But how can Beale do that, when Colak is in such good form since joining Rangers? The issue Beale has, is that Morelos is better at dropping in – more-suited to him.

Colak is more of a striker that looks to just score goals, sitting on the last man. Morelos is in worse form than Colak, but Morelos suits Beale’s system better. It will be interesting to see how the two co-operate with both up front.
