Kris Boyd explains why Steven Gerrard will be left ‘frustrated’ by Rangers after win against Celtic

Rangers won the final Old Firm game of the season against Celtic on Sunday afternoon.

Kris Boyd has claimed that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be ‘frustrated’ despite his team beating Celtic 2-0 in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon at Ibrox.

The Kilmarnock striker suggested that his former club could have ‘toppled’ their Old Firm rivals this season had they produced a better performance against the rest of the top six this term.

It seems as though the Light Blues are set to finish the campaign six points behind their Old Firm rivals despite securing a deserved three points against them during the penultimate week of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports Football straight after Rangers’ win (12/05/2019), Boyd admitted that there will be frustration in the Gers camp when they look back on the season as a whole.

“For Steven Gerrard, I would be ‘frustrated’,” Boyd told Sky Sports Football. “They have shown, especially here at Ibrox that they can compete with Celtic. I think the points they have dropped to the other teams in the top six have hindered their opportunities to be anywhere near Celtic.

“For me, when I look back over the season, this could have been the season that Rangers could have toppled Celtic because I don’t think they have been great in terms of where they have been in these last few seasons.

“If you see the head-to-heads, Rangers are more than capable of matching Celtic, but the worry for is they have not been able to do it, especially against the other teams in the top-six.”

The one positive Gerrard will take out of the win is that they have now won back-to-back home games against the Scottish Premiership champions.

Added with that, the performances have improved from his players and if they have a successful summer then they’ll back themselves to go all the way next term.

The Bhoys will be aiming for nine-in-a-row next season, but at this moment in time, a full-time manager is yet to be appointed with Neil Lennon currently in charge.
