Alfredo Morelos has probably been Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers’ best player this season.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers shoots on goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League between Celtic and at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Kris Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that Alfredo Morelos should win Player of the Year this season, but has suggested that his fellow professionals may purposely not vote for him just because he plays for Rangers.

The Rangers striker has arguably been the best player in Scottish football this season, netting 27 goals across all competitions.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard seems to have taken the Colombian’s game to the next level entirely and although he is unlikely to win anything at Ibrox, he may find himself picking up individual honours.

But the fiery striker, who’s been sent off four times this season, has clashed with a number of players.

And Kilmarnock striker Boyd has intimated that players might not vote for him on the basis of his personality, overlooking his contribution to Rangers this season.

He said to The Scottish Sun: “He has been my Player of the Year and is the man who should be crowned.

“Whether that happens, I’m not so sure. He has rubbed some opponents up the wrong way while there are others who simply won’t vote for him because they don’t like Rangers.

“That’s why the whole awards process is fundamentally flawed in my opinion.”

Morelos will surely be joined in the shortlist by Rangers team-mate Allan McGregor, while Celtic duo Callum McGregor and James Forrest might well be there too.

Boyd is right – Morelos should be taking home the award, but time will tell whether he will.

Scottish football hasn’t had a great season as far as publicity goes and if the league’s best player is denied the end-of-season award because of who he plays for, or because of his temperament, then that’ll be another horrendous indictment for the division.
