Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that he expects Danny Wilson to start for the Gers against Celtic today, as long as he’s passed fit.

Rangers are in Scottish League Cup action this afternoon, as they take on Old Firm rivals Celtic in the semi-finals of the competition at Hampden Park.

Celtic hammered Rangers 5-1 in the league back in September, and whilst Mark Warburton endured a difficult spell last month, they’ve started October with wins over Partick Thistle and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Rangers’ much-criticised defence kept clean sheets in both of those games, despite having to play different centre back partnerships; firstly, Philippe Senderos and Danny Wilson against Partick Thistle, and then Rob Kiernan and Clint Hill against Inverness.

Manager Warburton will be hoping for a better defensive display than during that 5-1 defeat, but with two different partnerships, he has a decision to make over who plays at centre back this afternoon.

With Celtic’s prolific hitman Moussa Dembele potentially set to start again having notched a hat-trick against Rangers last month, Rangers need to be strong defensively – and former Gers striker Kris Boyd has had his say on the Rangers defence.

Boyd told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Wilson – who is an injury doubt with a thigh problem – will come back into defence if he’s passed fit to play.

Boyd didn’t suggest who Wilson should partner, but did state that the Rangers defence need to ‘squeeze the game’ rather than go pressing Celtic in midfield as they did in last month’s clash.

“If Rangers go and press Celtic in midfield the Celtic front three will exploit the space in behind,” said Boyd. “That means the Gers back four — one that hasn’t been settled — will need to squeeze the game. Clint Hill and Rob Kiernan did well against Inverness Caley last Friday night, but I would expect Danny Wilson to return if he’s fit.”
