Celtic claimed a valuable three points against St Johnstone on Sunday.
Kris Boyd brushed off Celtic’s claim for a penalty in the first half as they comfortably beat St Johnstone 2-0 [BBC Sport] in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
Kilmarnock forward Boyd claimed that St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright would have been ‘raging’ had the penalty been awarded to the away side.
Celtic forward Olivier Burke went through on goal in the first half, with opposition defender Jason Kerr sliding in behind him to win the ball as he entered the penalty area.
Boyd was insistent that referee Willie Collum made the right decision to not award Brendan Rodgers side with a spot-kick, with the scores goalless at the time.
“I think he [the referee] is right,” Boyd told Sky Sports Football at halftime on 03/02/2019. “I think it is a coming together and I would be disappointed if a penalty was given for that one.
“It’s a great tackle,” Boyd tells McFadden who thought it was a penalty. “He [the refree] has made what he deems to be the right call. For me, I agree with him. If St Johnstone go behind to that then Tommy Wright would be raging with that decision.”
James Forrest opened the scoring for Celtic deep into the second half when he slotted home Timothy Weah’s cross after he had come on as a second-half substitute.
The club’s January addition then doubled his side’s lead with minutes left on the clock when the away team counter-attacked the opposition following a corner.
As a result of those three points, the Bhoys have opened up a six-point lead on their title rivals, with Rangers sitting in second place and Aberdeen closely following them in third.
Celtic will now turn their attention to Hibernian, who will make the trip to Glasgow on Wednesday night before Rodgers side take on St Johnstone again next Sunday this time in the Scottish Cup.
