Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers signed Carlos Pena in the summer of 2017 when Pedro Caixinha was in charge of the Gers.
Pena joined Rangers from Guadalajara in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by The Scottish Sun to be worth £2.2 million.
Much was expected of the Mexico international midfielder when he arrived at Ibrox, but the 27-year-old has failed to make an impact for the Gers.
According to The Scottish Sun, Pena is on the verge of joining Cruz Azul and reuniting with his former Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha.
It has been reported that Rangers will pay half of the Mexican’s £26,000-a-week salary during his loan spell at Cruz Azul.
The 27-year-old will spend the next 12 months at the Mexican club, who will have the option to sign at the end of that term, according to the report.
Kilmarnock striker Boyd, who had two separate spells at Rangers, has strongly criticised Pena, and believes that the midfielder has been “an unmitigated disaster” at the Gers.
Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun: “And if Pedro Caixinha is willing to sign the biggest joker in the pack for the second time in six months I’ll charter a plane and fly Pena back to Mexico myself.
“Much like the man who brought him to Ibrox, the midfielder has been an unmitigated disaster.
“His heart and soul has never been in it and Rangers should cut their losses just to send him packing.”
Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has also given his take on Pena’s future and wrote in The Daily Record: “It’ll probably be a relief for Pena that there is a chance to return to Mexico this month as it’s clearly not working out for him here.”
Ferguson added: “Pena would be far better off going back to his homeland and playing some football over there because he’s not going to get much of a sniff of it at Rangers now Murty is adding to the squad.”
