Kris Boyd suggests that Celtic fans should tempter their expectations.
Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has criticised Celtic fans in The Scottish Sun.
Boyd, who had two separate spells at Rangers, has stated that Celtic supporters are wrong to think that they are better than the Europa League.
The 35-year-old former Scotland international striker made the comments following the Hoops’ defeat in the Champions League qualifiers this week.
Neil Lennon’s side now have to go through a playoff round to feature in the group stage of the Europa League this season.
Boyd has also claimed that Celtic will not be able to sign expensive and quality defenders in the summer transfer window, as the Glasgow giants cannot afford to.
Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Seem to me that some Celtic supporters think they’re too good for the Europa League. But let me tell them something they ought to know by now. That’s their level.
“Those fans who booed their team off the pitch after Tuesday’s defeat to Cluj are deluding themselves if they think they belong in the Champions League.”
Boyd added: “But going back to the supporters, if they think Celtic are going to go into the market and sign two defenders at £12m each then they’re yet again deluded.
“The club might have the cash to pay transfer fees that high. But players at that level come at a cost of around £30,000 a week and that’s just too rich for Celtic.”
European disappointment
It is the second successive season in which Celtic have failed to progress to the group stage of the Champions League.
While the Hoops may not have one of the strongest teams in the qualifiers, the Glasgow giants do have some decent players, and they should have done better at Celtic Park in the second leg against CFR Cluj.
