Kris Boyd offers his two cents on what is happening at Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Rangers legend Kris Boyd has questioned the role of the Gers’ Director of Football Mark Allen.
Rangers appear to be closing in on the shock appointment of Steven Gerrard as Graeme Murty’s tenure as manager comes to a close.
The Liverpool icon has never managed a senior team before and will leave his role in charge of the Reds’ youth side if the move to Ibrox materialises.
Gerrard represents quite the risk for a Rangers side who were linked with tried-and-tested figures such as Derek McInnes and Alex McLeish after Pedro Caixinha’s axing in October.
Allen is responsible for the recruitment in Glasgow and Boyd admits that he has no idea what he is doing up there.
“I don’t think there is a clear direction or plan of where the club wants to go,” he told The Daily Mail. “It seems as if they are trying to grab everything to see if what you grab works rather than having a plan, a structure.
“I still don’t know what Mark Allen is doing. It would be interesting to see what’s gone on in there with him. I think the Rangers fans would want to know exactly what’s going on.
“If you are the director of football and you try to bring in a manager who has been over the course and distance, knows exactly what is going on in Scotland, then all of a sudden you are going to Liverpool to take their youth coach, it doesn’t add up.
“There needs to be a plan and direction and at this moment in time I don’t think anybody knows.”
Boyd is right. It does seem an odd situation at Rangers at the moment. Celtic have won seven Premiership titles in a row and those on the blue side of the Old Firm divide don’t really have the luxury to conduct experiments when time is of the essence in regards to preventing the Hoops from winning 10 on the spin.
