Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers signed Greg Docherty last January.

Kris Boyd has told The Scottish Sun that he doesn’t think Rangers-owned Greg Docherty will be returning to Ibrox in the summer.

But it hasn’t really worked out for the 22-year-old, who was farmed out to Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan by Gers boss Steven Gerrard.
Incidentally, Docherty has had an excellent season for the League One side but, with Rangers boasting an abundance of very capable midfielders, it remains to be seen whether Gerrard sees a long-term future for him.
“The recruitment process over the past 12 months hasn’t been great — and I’m NOT blaming Gerrard,” he told The Scottish Sun.
“Look at last January when Greg Docherty was brought in from Hamilton. He was quickly shipped out on loan to Shrewsbury and there’s no sign of him coming back.”
Is it as cut and dried as Boyd is making out? Certainly not. Docherty does have a future at Rangers, but not as the player Gerrard loaned out.
Gerrard loaned out a defensive midfielder, but the youngster has been thriving in a more advanced midfield role in English football and it’ll be interesting to see if he returns to Glasgow a different player.
Gerrard told The Scottish Sun earlier in Decemeber, when asked if he’d recall Docherty: “It’s a tough decision that one. We love Greg as a person and as a player: He’s very young, and it’s a difficult one to judge what is the next best step for him because he’s enjoying his football and he’s getting regular games.”
