Kolo Toure has expressed a desire to extend his contract at Liverpool, but has he done enough to earn fresh terms?
Kolo Toure has told Sky Sports that he is hoping to land a contract extension at Liverpool.
The experienced defender joined the Reds in 2013 on a two-year deal.
He will reach the end of that agreement this summer, and will drop into the free agent pool if no fresh terms are agreed.
The 33-year-old is a player with over 330 Premier League appearances under his belt and title successes on a distinguished CV from his time at Arsenal and Manchester City.
He has, however, slipped down the centre-half pecking order at Anfield, with Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho providing fierce competition for places.
| Won Tackle | Outfielder Block | Duel Won | Total Clearance | Interception | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Martin Skrtel | 22 | 21 | 106 | 199 | 37 | 19 | 1,710 |
| Dejan Lovren | 21 | 4 | 97 | 137 | 26 | 16 | 1,218 |
| Mamadou Sakho | 13 | 2 | 39 | 49 | 13 | 9 | 788 |
| Kolo Touré | 10 | 5 | 29 | 44 | 6 | 8 | 551 |
Toure has made just eight top-flight appearances this season and is currently away with Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.
His statistics in the Opta table above suggest that he may struggle to convince Brendan Rodgers that he is deserving of an extended stay.
Toure told Sky Sports News HQ on Tuesday: “I just enjoy every single minute. I hope that I will extend my contract with Liverpool, if I have the chance. If I don’t have the chance, I will go somewhere else. When I am somewhere I want to make an impact, I don’t want to be there just to be there. For me, that’s really, really important.”
He may be a seasoned campaigner, but Liverpool have been looking to the future in many of their recent transfer deals.
Were they to part with Toure, they would free up space in their squad and a salary which could be used elsewhere.
