Everton have struggled in the league but their young forward scored a brace in the EFL Cup this week.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has been speaking to reporters ahead of his side’s league game against Bournemouth this weekend, with his comments later published on the Toffees official Twitter account.

Among the subjects up for discussion was the recent form of forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored a brace in Everton’s 3-0 win over Sunderland in the EFL Cup earlier this week.

The youngster began the season in Everton’s starting XI but he has made to make do with a place on the bench for their last three league games, although it would be one hell of a surprise if he did not start against the Cherries.

“Compared to strikers of his age, he is a big talent,” Koeman said of the 20-year-old. “He’s strong. He’s fast. He can be more clinical.

“He listens and is willing to learn. (There are) a lot of possibilities with him in the team.”

That final comment suggests the Everton boss is prepared to play Calvert-Lewin more often than not as he attempts to get his side back to winning ways and at the right end of the table.

Everton have been alarmingly slow up front, despite the undoubted quality of Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson, and a younger, pacier alternative to feed off their creativity is just what they need right now.

With Koeman urging Calvert-Lewin to be more clinical in front of goal, only time will tell if the youngster heeds his advice and becomes the prolific front man the Toffees are crying out for since the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

After all, scoring a brace against a struggling Championship side is one thing and doing it week in, week out in the top flight is quite another.
