Everton are reportedly keen on Sporting CP’s Bas Dost.
According to ESPN, Everton are plotting a January move to sign Sporting CP striker Bas Dost, as they seemingly lose hope of a deal for Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud.
The Toffees may have splashed the cash on a host of summer signings, such as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Gylfi Sigurdsson, but they missed out on one main addition – a new centre forward.
Romelu Lukaku’s move to Manchester United means Everton are without their top goalscorer from last season, and with no major replacement signed, manager Ronald Koeman needs a new signing in January.
Latest target Dost, 28, is no stranger to Koeman, as the Everton boss actually targeted Dost since December 2013, as Online Wedden reported that Koeman wanted to lure him to Feyenoord if Graziano Pelle left the Rotterdam club.
Koeman’s interest in Dost appeared again in 2014, as the Daily Express reported that he wanted the giant striker to join him at Southampton, but his form at Wolfsburg ultimately scuppered any possible deal.
Since Koeman’s initial interest almost four years ago, Dost has been through major ups and downs. Dost ended the 2013-14 campaign with just five goals in 15 games for Wolfsburg, but hit back in the 2014-15 season, notching 20 goals in 36 games.
Dost couldn’t replicate those feats moving forward, as he scored 11 times in his last 33 games for the German side before being sold to Sporting CP in Portugal in the summer of 2016 – and the 28-year-old can’t stop scoring.
With a staggering 41 goals in 53 games for Sporting, Dost is in the form of his life, and it’s no surprise that Koeman has rekindled his interest in the beanpole striker, given Everton’s lack of goals and his own love of target men.
Dost certainly couldn’t offer the same threat in behind defences that Lukaku could, but he would give Koeman a focal point in attack, and a proven finisher and aerial threat – just what Koeman needs right now.
