The former Liverpool man was part of Koeman’s coaching staff at Southampton.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted in him column for De Telegraaf that he could not bring Sammy Lee to the club because of his history with Liverpool.
The Dutch manager took charge at Goodison Park in the summer as the Blues brought him to replace Roberto Martinez.
As part of the move, several of his Southampton backroom staff followed him to Merseyside, notably his brother Erwin Koeman and fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg.
One man who did not swap clubs, though, was Sammy Lee, who instead ended up as part of the England coaching set up with Sam Allardyce.
And Koeman has admitted that he could not bring Lee to Everton with him because of his history with rivals Liverpool.
“Sammy has such a great history as a Liverpool player that it was difficult to take him to Everton,” he wrote in De Telegraaf.
“Then I’ve looked at what I could do for Sammy, but I soon noticed that his Liverpool background was a problem. It was not Sammy as a person because they may really like him.”
Luckily for Koeman not bringing Lee with him to Goodison Park has not affected Everton as they have started well under his leadership.
They are currently sixth in the table with 15 points from their first eight games. They have impressed defensively, currently owning the second-best record in the division in that regard.
Saturday afternoon saw them securing an excellent point away to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
