Former Ibrox assistant manager Archie Knox has raved about Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, as quoted in The Scottish Sun.

Knox, who was the assistant manager of Rangers from 1991 until 1998, believes that McGregor is a superb goalkeeper and has spoken highly of the Ibrox star.

The 73-year-old Scotsman, who has also praised midfielder Steven Davis and right-back James Tavernier, has been impressed by how consistently well the 39-year-old has played between the posts for Rangers.

Knox told The Scottish Sun: “There have been a lot of boys who have chipped in with important contributions and that’s why Rangers are champions. But I just think McGregor, Tavernier and Davis have been a notch above the rest.

“The level of performance from the goalkeeper this season has been sensational. I remember when he was a kid at Rangers and Alan Hodgkinson, the goalkeeping coach, told us we needed to hold on to the laddie.

“Back then, he reckoned he’d go on to become a top keeper — and he was right. The number of big and important saves he makes is just incredible.

“McGregor’s been doing that continually now for 20 years which takes a lot of doing. He is a winner.”

Best player for Rangers this season?

Rangers have been superb this season, and there have been a number of outstanding players.

While Davis has been superb in the middle of the park for Steven Gerrard’s team, Tavernier has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in the Scottish Premiership as a right-back, according to WhoScored.

McGregor has to be considered as one of the best players for Rangers this season, and it will not come as a surprise if he goes on to win the Player of the Year award.

The Scotsman may be 39 years of age, but the former Hull City goalkeeper is going as strong as ever and has made some wonderful saves.
