Liverpool are watching Alexander Isak closely with Noticias de Gipuzkoa reporting the Premier League giants see Real Sociedad’s Sweden striker as a long-term replacement for Roberto Firmino.

You can see why Jurgen Klopp may have identified the so-called ‘new Zlatan Ibrahimovic’ as the man to take Firmino’s place in the middle of Liverpool’s much-praised front three.

Like the brilliant Brazilian, Isak is a highly talented and intuitive number nine, blessed with superb footwork, speed and strength.

He’s not a bad finisher either. The one-time Dortmund youngster has found the net 33 times in two seasons at San Sebastian, comfortably outscoring Firmino during the same period.

And the fact Isak stood out a mile during Sweden’s Euro 2020 stalemate with Spain on Monday night speaks volumes.

He only touched the ball 20 times in Seville but still found time to run Luis Enrique’s defence ragged, coming oh so close to a first-half winner.

Could Alexander Isak replace Firmino at Liverpool?

Isak, who is understood to be valued at £60 million, has already been linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Reports from the Basque country today, however, claim Liverpool are also watching the 6ft 4in centre-forward closely.

Klopp apparently feels Isak would compliment Mo Salah and Sadio Mane nicely while providing the ruthless end product Firmino is often accused of lacking.

Earlier this week, 21-year-old Isak insisted his “plan is to stay at Real Sociedad”.

An offer from one of the biggest clubs on the continent, however, might change that stance.

While Klopp has played down suggestions Liverpool could spend big in the summer transfer window, Isak isn’t the first up-and-coming number nine to be linked with a move to the red half of Merseyside in recent weeks.

If reports are to be believed, Dusan Vlahovic, Donyell Malen and Lautaro Martinez are also on Liverpool’s radar.
