Liverpool take on Leicester City in the Premier League this weekend.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested to The Mirror that Brendan Rodgers will be expecting goals from Jamie Vardy after a shaky defensive showing from the Reds last night.

Klopp led out his Liverpool side in a Champions League game at Anfield for the first time since that remarkable comeback against Barcelona, but they were so nearly on the receiving end of a shock fightback.

Liverpool were 3-0 up in the first half as Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah found the net, before Hwang Hee-chan pulled one back for Salzburg.

Takumi Minamino and Erling Braut Haaland then remarkably pulled the Austrians level, exposing a shaky Liverpool side before Salah found the net again for a 4-3 win.

There were so many great aspects about the display from Liverpool, with some sensational attacking play in the first half, but the defensive showing will be a concern.

Joel Matip’s absence may be a factor here, as replacement Joe Gomez was unconvincing in patches, but Klopp must now look to sort the situation out ahead of the weekend game with Leicester City.

Brendan Rodgers takes on his Liverpool replacement Klopp for the first time in what should be fascinating return to Anfield for him, especially as his Leicester side looks to be really pushing not only for the top six, but possibly the top four.

After last night’s final whistle, Klopp suggested that Rodgers will be expecting Jamie Vardy to score five times against Liverpool after seeing their defensive showing, which Klopp himself tore into by calling the defensive positioning ‘rubbish’.

“I’m sure Brendan Rodgers will think if we defend like that against Leicester on Saturday, Jamie Vardy will run around our goalkeeper and score five times!” said Klopp. “How do I explain that? The first 30 minutes were some of the best football I’ve seen at Liverpool so far, we had a clear identity and did everything they didn’t like at high speed.”

“We scored three and could have scored more – but they changed their system, we changed our approach a little bit, and our defending didn’t make sense. It wasn’t the goals as such, they played some great football. But we gave the ball away for the first goal, the third goal, and the positioning was just rubbish!” he added.
