Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said to BBC Sport that he told his players he was happy with their performance last night.
Liverpool could only manage to pick up a 0-0 draw with Newcastle United, as their relatively poor away form continued.
The result means that the Reds have failed to pull away from the chasing pack, and Manchester United can now go level on points with them at the top of the league, if they win their game in hand.
But Klopp says that he could not be too critical of Liverpool’s display in the dressing room after the game.
“When I think back I think we had four 100 per cent chances,” Klopp said.
“We have won against Newcastle with fewer chances.
“When the result isn’t there, you have to think about the performance and I’m happy with the things I saw tonight and I can really work with that. That’s good.
“That’s what I’ve told the boys. They are really disappointed and rightly so, but not about the performance because that was absolutely okay, and if we keep playing like this we will win football games.”
Liverpool were indeed stopped by an inspired goalkeeper display from Karl Darlow.
The Newcastle custodian pulled off some memorable saves, including one from Mohamed Salah in the first-half, as Steve Bruce’s side picked up a highly credible point.
Liverpool’s advantage at the top of the table is now three points, but they have lost the air of invincibility that they had around them last season.
Klopp’s men are back in action on Monday, when they face Southampton at St. Mary’s, in what could be another difficult away trip.
