Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joe Gomez is not injured after he was left out of the matchday squad against Leicester.

Gomez has found football hard to come by this season, and while he came off the bench in Liverpool’s previous league game against Crystal Palace, he was left out entirely against Leicester on Thursday.

The England international’s omission inevitably led to speculation about his fitness, but Klopp says that he actually wasn’t injured, instead he was just dropped from the squad due to the fact the manager didn’t feel as though he needed two defenders on the bench.

What’s Klopp said?

The manager shared why Gomez and Origi weren’t on the bench against Leicester.

“Those two were not injured, it happens a lot where we have these quality players and they cannot make the squad. For Joe the situation was that we had to make a decision about whether or not we wanted a second centre-half in the squad or not,” Klopp said.

Difficult

Gomez is in such a tough situation and it’s through no fault of his own.

The Englishman is still a top-level centre-back, but sadly, Liverpool have three other defenders who can more than give him a run for his money.

Gomez is finding it hard to break into the XI at the moment, but when you’re as talented as he is it’s hard to imagine it will be long before he’s once again staking a claim for a starting spot.
