Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested to the Liverpool Echo that he will try to get Joel Matip back in his starting line-up for their next Premier League game, which comes against Manchester United.

Matip is currently out injured, and missed Liverpool’s last game against Southampton.

The central defender’s absence was sorely felt, with the Reds losing 1-0 on the south coast.

With Liverpool’s lead now cut at the top, their next game against Manchester United looks like a huge one.

And Klopp admits that he will be doing everything in his power to ensure that Matip can feature.

“We will try [to get him fit for Man Utd]. He’s in a good way, but it will be United or a few days later, I don’t know. We will see.”

If Liverpool cannot call upon Matip to play against United then their defensive options could be very short.

Jordan Henderson had to play at centre back in Liverpool’s last game, but the move didn’t work out particularly well, with the England international looking fairly uncomfortable.

Henderson actually admitted that he found it difficult playing in defence after the game, and the task would surely only be made harder if he was to come up against United.

Liverpool’s other options if Matip isn’t deemed fit are Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams, who are both very inexperienced.
