Klopp refuses to rule out Origi sale, should Newcastle move?

Origi is way down the pecking order at Liverpool and Newcastle need a striker.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has refused to rule out the sale of striker Divock Origi this summer after a disappointing loan spell with German side Wolfsburg, and Rafa Benitez should consider raiding his old side by luring Origi to Newcastle.

The 23-year-old scored just seven goals in 36 games as Wolfsburg narrowly escaped relegation from the top tier of German football, despite being given pre-season expectations of a top six finish.

Origi has since returned to Liverpool and featured in friendlies against Chester and Tranmere, as he looks to show Klopp and indeed any other interested parties that he still has what it takes to impress at the highest level.

After Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Tranmere, Klopp was asked about the future of Origi – as well as Daniel Sturridge – and refused to rule out a sale but did state that he would like to keep both strikers at Anfield.

“Everybody has a place [here]. I would be really crazy if I would not give these boys a chance – they are fantastic players, they’ve played fantastic games, so we will see what happens,” Klopp said.

That should convince Newcastle to make a bid for the Belgium international, who is in need of first-team football if he is to reignite his career after somewhat stuttering at Liverpool since his move from Lille.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker after Islam Slimani failed on loan, while Dwight Gayle and Joselu managed a total of 10 Premier League goals last term. Aleksandar Mitrovic is expected to leave.

Origi should be the man Newcastle turn to, and would be a decent option as he could be available on loan and has scored 12 goals in the Premier League – with 30 of his 51 league appearances being from the bench.

He has completed 90 minutes of Premier League action just seven times, so if Benitez does indeed lure him to St. James’ Park and gives him a chance, he could finally turn Origi’s potential into proven quality.
