Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to the class and professionalism of goalkeeper Adrian.
Klopp benched the Spaniard for last night’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.
The Reds boss brought bereaved Alisson back into the first XI after Adrian started the victory over Sheffield United this past weekend.
With Alisson back and Adrian’s contract expiring this summer, he might never play for the Anfield club again.
But the German manager was full of praise for the 34-year-old.
He told Sky Sports last night: “What a person and what a professional. His attitude and energy hasn’t dropped even half-a-per-cent, despite circumstances that cannot have been easy for him. The club is very fortunate to have him with us.”
Liverpool have the option to give the former West Ham United stopper a one-year extension, but will they? In a word, no.
Klopp might be a fan of Adrian, but the truth is that he has been the Merseysiders’ third-choice option for much of the season after slipping behind 22-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher in the pecking order.
Next season, it’s almost certain that Kelleher will be Alisson’s understudy again and with Adrian earning £50,000 per week, there’s no sense in keeping him around for another year if he won’t even be making Klopp’s squad on a regular basis.
