Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has once again strongly hinted that his side will be having a quiet summer through his comments to the Liverpool Echo.
Liverpool have been linked with some high profile players heading into the summer transfer window, including Thiago Alcantara and Philippe Coutinho.
However, Klopp has played down suggestions that Liverpool are ready to spend, despite their success this season
“To strengthen the squad you need money and these are uncertain times,” he said. “Obviously, uncertain times means for some clubs we cannot do what we would do in non-uncertain times.
“Ask me can we develop the squad and it is probably possible, but only with real money. We have talents ourselves, big talents, and players who can make big steps in our squad.
“But buying now? Just go out and there and name whoever you want, whatever the player is, go for it? That is really difficult. It was always difficult.
“We did not invest a lot in the squad last year and that was before COVID. We do not know when supporters will be back in the stadium.
“Whoever knows, tell me and then we can plan with that. That is how the club has been led since before I was here. If we have money, we will spend.
“If we do not know if we will have money, we probably will not spend that much. That is how it is.”
The comments may well disappoint Liverpool supporters, and the Liverpool Echo actually go as far as to say that Thiago is not even on the Reds’ shortlist.

The concern around Liverpool is that they may stand still, while all their rivals opt to strengthen.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all look to be ready to invest this summer, which could see the gap to Liverpool reduced.
The Reds are hardly in dire need of new signings after such a successful campaign, but there is that some areas of their squad may need renovating with an injection of quality.
Klopp’s latest hint suggest that Liverpool could well be set to go two years without making a signing who could immediately impact on their first team, and it will be interesting to see if their current squad can continue to deliver success next term, if that is the case.
