Well, Darwin Nunez certainly kicked off his Liverpool career in style.
The Uruguay international netted a debut goal as Liverpool beat Manchester City 3-1 at The King Power Stadium to win the Community Shield.
Nunez was benched by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp originally but came on in the second half, with the Anfield outfit leading 1-0 at the time.
In the final minutes of stoppage time, the former Benfica attacker nodded home a third to kill off Pep Guardiola’s side once and for all.
And here’s how Klopp reacted to his performance, telling ITV Sport: “He used the spaces and finished well, too.”
There’ll be tougher tests to come for Nunez, even if this was against the Premier League champions, but this is certainly a very encouraging start.
This is someone who cost Liverpool £85 million and with someone like Sadio Mane no longer at the club, a core member of the squad that’s delivered the Reds so much success, it’s vital that Nunez hits the ground running.
And although scoring late in the Community Shield against City doesn’t exactly constitute a fast-and-furious start to English football yet, the signs are definitely good so far and hopefully for the South American and his teammates, long may it last.
