Liverpool could this weekend see the return of Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara after over seven weeks out of action through injury.

According to the Athletic, the former Bayern Munich star has rejoined first-team training after missing all of January and most of December due to a hip injury, with Thiago now in contention to start this weekend in the FA Cup against Cardiff City.

The return of Thiago will be a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp, who has been without his star midfielder for almost 50 days through injury. The 30-year-old’s last appearance for Liverpool came in a 3-1 win against Newcastle United in mid-December.

With Harvey Elliott also reportedly close to return from injury after almost five months out, Liverpool’s options are looking healthy as we head into a crucial part of the season, with new signing Luis Diaz also expected to be integrated into the squad in the coming days.

Moreover, Thiago’s return from injury coincides with Liverpool’s first domestic cup final in six years when the Reds face Chelsea later this month at Wembley Stadium in the League Cup, a competition the Merseyside club have not won since 2012.

With the UEFA Champions League round of 16 also kicking off this month, Thiago’s comeback to full fitness could not have come at a more perfect time, with Liverpool needing all the bodies and quality needed to compete in three competitions and the Premier League.

Thiago has been one of Liverpool’s most important players since arriving last season from Bayer, and the midfielder’s return from his latest injury could be key in the upcoming months for Klopp’s side.

After all, there is a real chance that Liverpool can win silverware this season given their positions in all three cup competitions. And for Thiago to be back to full fitness now, the midfielder has got over from injury at the ideal time.
