Liverpool fans will be relieved to hear that the ankle injury sustained by Emre Can last night in their 5-0 drubbing of Burton is not serious, according to Jurgen Klopp, who was speaking to Sky Sports.

Can was stretchered off in the 71st minute with Liverpool 3-0 up on their Championship opponents, having sustained a knock to the same ankle that caused him difficulty at the end of last season.

Liverpool eventually ran out 5-0 winners in the East Midlands, with Daniel Sturridge grabbing a brace as well as Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi getting their names on the scoresheet, whilst Tom Naylor also scored an own goal.

And whilst Can’s injury is not serious, Klopp will be hoping he hasn’t suffered a recurrence of last season’s knock.

“I saw the situation. He stretched himself, and he had an issue with his ankle, so that’s what is most concerning at the moment.

“But it is not that serious. It’s not that big of a pain any more, but it’s the ankle he had problems with at the end of last season, so he’s a little bit worried. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.”

Last season Can ruptured ankle ligaments in Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Borussia Dortmund, but he made a swift recovery, coming back ahead of schedule to feature against Villareal in the Reds’ semi-final second leg, beating what was thought to be an injury that would rule him out for the season.

Can made 30 appearances for Liverpool last season and became an increasingly important figure in the Liverpool midfield, having previously featured in a full-back and even centre-back role in the past.
